Rebecca’s Tips: Pride Weekend Safety
You’ve seen tons of Pride Weekend posts lately: where to go, what to do and even what to wear. Why wouldn’t you? It’s arguably San Francisco’s biggest annual event. For Rebecca’s Tips: we went a different route. Here’s how to enjoy your weekend… SAFELY.
This means bring a handy water jug or bottle. Gatorade and anything replenishing your electrolytes can be handy as well! A 12-pack of beer, 3 mimosas or even a cocktail isn’t hydrating. This weekend is going to be sunny and packed with people. The best thing you can do for your body is keep it cool.
GROUP UP & HAVE A MEETING POINT
Because of the record number of attendees every year, it would be so easy to get lost. Decide on a meeting point and make sure everyone has their phones with them. Big crowd = more opportunity for pickpockets and other opportunists. Being with a group you know and trust minimizes the risk of getting taken advantage of.
Do make sure your phone, Apple Watch and other electronics you use for communications are fully charged up. You’re going to drain battery by taking pictures and videos and the last thing you want is not to be able to call anyone in case of emergency or use that Lyft or Uber app to go home.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
If you know you’re going to consume alcohol, even if you’re with a bunch of people, you have to know when to stop. Set a limit, and although its tempting, follow through it. You don’t want to be passed out or sprawled on a sidewalk in SF during Pride weekend, trust us.
AVOID THOSE SPEAKERS
There will be speakers everywhere. Do your eardrums a favor and stay a good distance away from them. When the bass drops, your ears will thank you later.
Sweating from the sun and being in super close proximity with a huge crowd = a breeding ground for a variety of bacteria. Do your body a favor and bring that small bottle of sanitizer or pack of small wipes with you. Both are available in mini travel sizes and will not cramp up your festival style with bulkiness!
BRING ANOTHER LAYER
Summer in San Francisco can feel like Winter really fast.
WEAR PROTECTIVE SHOES
Its tempting to wear those strappy gladiators this summer but leaving your feet exposed to grime, spit, throw up and other unmentionables during Pride week is a risk you don’t want to take.
If you see something suspicious, tell an authority asap! There’s nothing to lose with being alert and extra cautious. If something doesn’t feel right, follow your gut feeling and leave. There is always next year!
